Announced this week, German automotive company, Schaeffler, is acquiring a new technology called Space Drive. Space Drive is from Paravan GmbH, which is positioned to play a key role in the future of self-driving cars.
Space Drive was initially developed by Paravan to help people with physical disabilities. The technology allows for vehicles to be controlled remotely, like via a mobile app. This eliminates the need for a steering wheel.
I bet you never thought about the reality of that concept, huh?
“Even in part-time autonomous passenger cars with steering wheels, the space saved by eliminating the steering column opens up completely new possibilities for vehicle and cab interior design.” The reps at Schaeffler have a great point. After all, this opens up an entirely new design perspective for cars.
As part of the transaction, Schaeffler and Paravan are creating a joint venture that will be 90%owned by Schaeffler Technologies AG.
